House Mathew

This residence is located in Vermont, a coastal suburb of Hermanus in the Overberg region of the Western Cape. The contemporary design responds to the site’s natural slope, with a masonry lower floor cut into the site, and a timber-framed upper floor that opens onto a sheltered, north-facing garden.

The house features low mono-pitch roofs with clerestory windows, allowing ample natural light into the living spaces while maintaining privacy. The orientation and layout are optimized for solar gain and protection from prevailing winds.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the design. The house operates entirely off-grid, powered by a rooftop solar photovoltaic system with panels integrated into the roof design to minimize visual impact. Rainwater is harvested and stored, reducing reliance on municipal water supply.
