After 15 years of experience in both the construction and design of timber buildings, and as a result of his passion for timber buildings, Jacques started the practice ‘ Jacques Cronje Timber Design’ in 2007. The primary focus of the practice is the design and provision of architectural services for sustainable and timber projects.
Our aim with each design project, small or large, is to provide architectural design excellence as well as solutions that minimise environmental impact and maximise the efficient utilisation of materials, while focusing on the specific requirements of each client and site.
As a result of the use of the latest cutting edge design software, we are able to operate as a small practice, ensuring personal attention to every aspect of each project. We use parametric modelling software, Archicad, where the design of a project is done in 3d from the outset, allowing for the designers to develop every detail of project by virtual construction of the building. As the drawing documentation, rather than being drafted, is accurately generated from the relevant portions of the detailed 3d model, we are allowed more time to focus on design rather than drafting. Working in 3d also allows any design issues, which typically may only have been discovered on site, to already be resolved in the design phase.
We pride ourselves in producing drawings and documentation that is precise and accurately detailed to exacting specifications. An in depth knowledge in all aspects of timber construction also allows us to provide a thorough contract administration service.
We maintain an updated knowledge and understanding of the South African building regulations and South African National Standards Codes, which allows us to efficiently guide our clients through all aspects of the regulatory environment and provide drawings and specifications to ensure compliance. This includes designing according to the latest energy efficiency regulations, SANS Part XA, or rational design to comply with the requirements of SANS 204 Energy Efficiency, a service we provide inhouse and included with our standard service. Jacques is on the SANS sub-committee tasked with updating the South African National Standard SANS 10082 for Timber Frame Buildings.
While our focus is on design for construction with timber, we also incorporate materials like brickwork, concrete, stone and steel in many of our designs, depending on the specific requirements and the principle of using materials best fit for purpose for each application.
Jacques is registered with the South African Council for Architecture (SACAP) as a Professional Architect (Pr.Arch)

There are several options as to how we can assist you with architectural services for your new home.
1. Pre Property-Purchase Consultation
If you have not yet purchased your property but are keen to build some time in the future, have a shortlist of properties in mind and are just wanting advise to get started, then this is a good starting point. This includes a needs analysis, a basic feasibility and assistance with the selection of a suitable property from a shortlist of up to 3 properties in the same area. Our fee for this is a flat rate fee of R 5000.00
2. Standard Architectural Service
If you’ve bought your property and wanting to start building within a year, this is the service you’ll require. We offer a full service from concept to completion / handover of keys, or you can select a partial service. Refer our Guide to the Architectural Design and Building Process Document for the various architectural stages and scope of work.
3. Project Appraisal and Concept
The Project Appraisal and Concept is offered as a low-commitment fixed price alternative to appointing us to provide the full architectural service. It is ideal for clients who already own the property they wish to develop, but are still uncertain of what or when they want to build, or want to know what they could build for their budget. It consists of Stages 1 (Inception) and Stage 2 (Concept and Viability) of the Standard Architectural Service. This will provide you with a concept design with plans, elevations and 3D perspectives as well as estimated project costs for your budgeting purposes. See this as the second step (after having purchased your property) on the road towards building your new home. Its a standalone service and you are free to use us, or any other architect to draughtsman of your choice, to continue the process to Local Authority plan approvals and construction documentation once you are ready to proceed further.
